Matt Clark, also known as Carter Mills and Mitch Bacall, is a fictional character on The Young and the Restless currently portrayed by Roger Howarth. He was previously portrayed by Eddie Cibrian, Russell Lawrence, and Rick Hearst.
On August 28, 2025 it was announced that soap vet Roger Howarth would be joining Y&R in a mysterious role. On October 27, it was revealed he will be playing a character named Mitch Bacall, who is the husband of the mysterious character Sienna Bacall. Howarth made his first appearance on October 31, where it is revealed that Mitch Bacall is actually Matt Clark.
Biography[]
First Reign of Terror[]
In the beginning, Matt Clark dated Sharon Collins. Matt and Nicholas Newman were rivals. Nick dated Amy Wilson, Sharon's best friend. Then Nick set his sights on Sharon. She liked him, too, even though she was attracted to Matt. Sharon eventually left Matt for Nick.
In 1995, Nick proposed to Sharon. Matt sought revenge by beating Nick and raping Sharon! Hoping that he would destroy Nick and Sharon for good, Matt told Nick that Sharon had given up a child for adoption, but Nick and Sharon remained intact. However, after Sharon confessed that Matt had raped her, Nick went to confront Matt and found him dead on his floor! Matt was shot and Nick was arrested. Nick was convicted of murder and sentenced to fifteen years in jail.
In 1996, it was revealed that Amy had shot Matt after he raped her and Nick was cleared.
In 2001, Matt came back to town as Carter Mills after having plastic surgery to look like a totally different person. He tried to rape Sharon again, but failed. His unwitting accomplice, Tricia McNeil, purposely crashed a car they were in, putting him in the hospital. Matt pulled out his own breathing tube and pinned the "murder" on Nick. Matt also told Nick that he had raped Sharon. Sharon was pregnant and Nick thought that the child might be Matt's. Sharon later miscarried and the child was proven to be Nick's not Matt's.
As Mitch Bacall[]
In 2025, Matt was revealed to be alive under the name of Mitch Bacall. He had married a woman named Sienna and they founded a club together called the Shadow Room in L.A. Sharon ran into Matt as she was leaving the club after talking to Sienna and was shocked to find out that not only was he alive but he was also Sienna's husband Mitch.
Matt did everything to deny who he was, but neither Sharon or Nick believed him, and also believed he had something to do with their son Noah Newman's accident since Noah was supposed to meet with "Mitch" to talk about opening a club in L.A. Nick confronted Matt and punched him in front of Sienna. Sharon also confronted Matt refusing to be intimidated by him.
It was also revealed that Matt had Detective Burrows on his payroll, and was believed to be trafficking Fentanyl through his club. Matt also had previously employed Holden Novak as a bartender when an incident occurred that involved a woman named Audra Cortez.
When Noah got out of the hospital, Matt confronted him about him sleeping with Sienna after he tried to be a friend to him. Matt then had Noah and Sienna imprisoned in an abandoned building.
He when went to Sharon's hotel room as the fire alarm went off. Once it was stopped, Matt was grateful as it allowed him to think of it. He lashed out at Sharon for Noah sleeping with Sienna. Sharon said she and Nick didn't know about it, but what Noah did paled in comparison to what he did to her and Nick. Matt demand Sharon call Nick hinting that he had made Noah disappear.
When Nick arrived, he attacked and threatened Matt, but was forced to relent since Matt was in control as the only one who knew where Noah was. Matt gave Sharon and Nick a clue that led them to a run down old area with several abandoned buildings with Noah and Sienna presumably being in one.
While Matt and Burrows were at the Shadow Room, Victor came in to threaten Matt, who remained unfazed. He and Burrows checked in on Noah and Sienna just as they managed to open their door. Matt tossed a package of fentanyl at Noah's feet and demanded he take it as Burrows held his gun on Sienna, but then turned it on Matt, finally having the evidence needed to arrest Matt for trafficking Fentanyl.
Burrows called his partner Annie Stewart, who then reveled her true alliance by holding a gun to Burrows back. Noah and Sienna grabbed Annie's hand as a distraction causing him, Sienna, and Matt to flee while Burrows and Annie fought over the weapon.
Matt returned to the Shadow Room looking for Sienna just to hear her car speed off, so Matt followed them. While perusing them, Victor phoned Matt and told him he had an AI program that could wipe out Matt's finances and bankrupt the Shadow Room. He threatened to use it if Matt didn't tell him where Noah was, but then Victor leaned Noah was safe and spitefully used the AI program, forcing a furious Matt to give up the chase to try to save his business to no avail.
Matt learned all his finances had been completely wiped out and he no longer owned the Shadow Room. Annie met up with Matt having gotten away from Burrows, and accompanied him to Genoa City as Matt planned his revenge.
